On July 27, heavy rain caused flooding in the basement of Rau’s IAS coaching center in Old Rajinder Nagar, leading to the deaths of three UPSC candidates. Since then, students in Delhi have been protesting against coaching centers and demanding “justice.” The protests have now spread to other coaching center hubs, including Mukherjee Nagar. Rajiv Sinha, the sub-divisional magistrate of Model Town, Rajiv Sinha, the sub-divisional magistrate of Model Town, met with students in Mukherjee Nagar to understand their needs. In response to the unauthorized use of basements, students have demanded action against coaching facilities, landowners, and government representatives. They also want measures to address waterlogging in the area, which is prone to flooding due to inadequate drainage systems.
On Saturday, three students tragically died when rainfall entered the basement of the coaching center. Officials from the fire department and police received the call at approximately 7:10 p.m.
Rescuers needed divers to reach the students, so they contacted an NDRF crew. The basement was quickly drained of water.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has established a committee with a 30-day deadline to deliver a report on the incident. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has sealed twenty coaching centers for violating basement ordinances.
