On August 9, the nation was shocked when authorities discover the semi-naked body of the 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor.
Who had been sexually assaulted and killed inside the seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Following an initial inquiry and analysis of the CCTV cameras on the hospital grounds, the Kolkata Police took Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, into custody. Roy later confessed to his involvement in the crime.
The authorities suspended many high-ranking officials of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for their negligence in the case. They also placed the accused
who was apprehend outside the hospital while intoxicated, in police detention until August 23.

From August 5 to August 8, Sanjay Roy attended a Police Welfare Society meeting in Salua, Kharagpur. He claimed he was on duty as a civic assistant during this period
August 8, morning:
Sanjay Roy went to RG Kar Hospital, where he worked as a broker, to assist with a patient’s admission upon his return to Kolkata.
After ensuring the patient was admit.he left the hospital but return later that evening.
August 8, night:
around 11 p.m., Sanjay Roy returned to RG Kar Hospital to help the same patient with an X-ray. The patient was accompanied by his family during this time. Sanjay stayed with them for a few minutes before leaving the hospital.
August 9, early hours:
Around 1 a.m., Sanjay Roy returned to the hospital to assist a different patient scheduled for surgery.After helping this patient
he remained on the hospital grounds and had a drink behind the building with one of the patient’s family members.
Additionally, he arranged an Uber bike for the family to use on their way home and provided them with financial support.
On August 9,
at around 3 a.m Sanjay Roy returned to the third floor of the Chest Medicine building at the hospital.
He quickly arrived at the seminar hall where the female doctor was sleeping. He is said to have raped and killed her in that location. Thirty to forty-five minutes later, Sanjay left the seminar hall.
On August 9
at around 4:30 a.m., CCTV footage showed Sanjay Roy leaving the hospital grounds at approximately 4:37 a.m. Afterward, he returned to his barrack and went to sleep.
Later that morning,
the Kolkata Police took Sanjay Roy into custody at his barrack after observing his suspicious behavior and reviewing the CCTV footage. They transported him back to the medical facility for questioning.
By the evening of August 9,
after a prolonged interrogation, the police formally charged Sanjay Roy with both rape and murder in connection with the crime.
